Adjust Vista's Visual Effects to Improve Performance

If Windows Vista is running slowly, you can speed it up by disabling up to 20 of it’s visual effects: like the transparent glass look, the way menus open or close, or whether shadows are displayed.

To adjust the visual effects:

1.  Go to Start >> Control Panel >> Performance Information and Tools

2.  Select Adjust Visual Effects from the Tasks list on the left.  If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

3.  Select the Visual Effects tab, click Adjust for best performance – or click Custom and de-select the visual effects you’d like to turn off.

4.  Click Apply, then OK to confirm your changes.
